Reliability Concerns Could Delay Closure Of 2 Pennsylvania Power Plants
August 14, 2013
FirstEnergy Corp. may not be able to shut down two coal-fired plants in southwestern Pennsylvania by Oct. 9, as the company had previously announced. PJM believes reliability could be compromised if the stations are retired within the next three months. According to the grid operator, the upgrades to transmission infrastructure that would be needed to compensate for the lost generation will not be ready by the proposed closing date. So it is asking FirstEnergy to continue running the plants until reliability concerns can be addressed. The company said it was reviewing the assessment and request.
