GDF SUEZ Subsidiary Expands Presence in Pennsylvania Retail Electricity Market

HOUSTON – October 29, 2009 – GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, the retail energy business of GDF SUEZ Energy North America, has secured a new electricity supply and services contract with Jeddo Coal Company, a Wilkes-Barre based operator of an anthracite coal mining facility in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

GDF SUEZ Energy Resources initially contracted with Jeddo Coal in 2008, providing Demand Response services to facilitate Jeddo Coal’s participation in the PJM Interruptible Load for Reliability (ILR) program, in which participants lower their electricity usage from the grid during peak periods to help lower costs and alleviate stress on the grid. In preparation for the 2010 expiration of rate caps in the Pennsylvania Power and Light (PPL) Electric Utilities territory, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources has now contracted with the coal producer to supply both Demand Response services and the electricity it needs to power field operations at its mining facility near Hazleton, Pennsylvania starting in January 2010.

“We’re very pleased with the confidence that Jeddo Coal has expressed in us by expanding our supply relationship well in advance of the PPL rate cap expiration,” said Bob Wilson, President and CEO, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources, NA. “We look forward to helping the company make the best electricity choices to fit its business needs for years to come.”

“Having worked with GDF SUEZ Energy Resources throughout the last year on our Demand Response initiatives, I know firsthand that this is a provider I can count on,” said James Pagnotti, President, Jeddo Coal Company. “The supply desk was very helpful when it came to pricing our energy, and it’s evident that GDF SUEZ Energy Resources is a customer-focused company with a solid financial history."

GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA is the second largest non-residential retail energy supplier in the U.S. and currently serves commercial and industrial customers in 11 markets: Delaware, Texas, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. The company serves over 50,000 accounts for customers having a peak demand ranging from 50 KW to more than 200 MW, with an estimated peak load totaling over 8,000 MW.
