ERCOT Says Texas Has Enough Power For Winter And Spring
November 4, 2013
ERCOT said it expects to have sufficient power supplies to serve consumer needs during the upcoming winter and spring. The Texas grid operator forecasts winter peak demand to remain below 50,000 MW, adding that about 74,000 MW of power resources will be available in the winter months. ERCOT experienced its winter record demand of 57,265 MW on Feb. 10, 2011; assuming typical generation outages, it expects to be able to handle that level of demand or higher this winter. However, it warned there is a slight possibility it may need to take steps to reduce demand if extremely high electric use and power plant outages occur simultaneously. For the spring, meanwhile, ERCOT said it does not see demand exceeding 57,000 MW, and expects 73,000 MW of to be available.
