Coal’s Share Of ERCOT Generating Mix Continues To Make Gains

Coal’s share of ERCOT’s generation mix continued to makes gains in January, as natural gas’ share dropped, according to data from the grid operator. Coal-fired facilities generated 38.4 percent of the energy needed in January, down from 40.8 percent in December but up from 36.9 percent in January 2013. Gas-fired plants provided 35.3 percent of the power consumed in January, a decrease from 38.6 percent in December and 41.3 percent in January 2013. Nuclear plants generated 13.1 percent of the electricity consumed in January, a jump from 11 percent in December and 11.5 percent in January 2013. Wind farms provided 12.6 percent of the electricity in January, rising from 8.6 percent in December and 9.5 percent in January 2013. Energy consumption across ERCOT’s footprint totaled 28.1 million MWh in January, compared with 25.6 million MWh in January 2013, a 9.6 percent increase.
